It opens your eyes to new places and faces to explore the rest of the world with. Whatever the season may be, backpacking sets you up for another trip of a lifetime. For one, winter backpacking has a ton of perks.
First, it offers a new view of your destination. Whether you’ve been there or not, going during winter definitely makes for an Instagram-worthy snap. There’s just something about those snow-dotted roads and white-tipped mountains that get us every time.
Another reason why we love backpacking during winter is it welcomes us with new challenges. We like making things a little hard on ourselves sometimes. It makes the end of the journey even more worth it! Oh and did we mention there aren’t any bugs during winter?
With that in mind, we’d like to leave you with an essential winter backpacking list of items and gear. Be sure to bring every last one of these:
Waterproof/breathable jacket and pants
Synthetic hiking pants
Base thermal layer
Warm coat (down or polyester filled)
Mittens or gloves (preferably wool)
Socks with extra set
Insulated waterproof hiking boots or gaiters (depending on type of backpacking)
Sleeping bag liner
Knife or multi-tool
Water filter or iodine drops/tablets
First aid kit
Lighter and waterproof matches
Tent (only after asking a professional; varies according to needs)
Bivy sack (alternative to a tent, specially if there isn’t much snow)
