Somewhere in the Indian Ocean is a tiny island called Sri Lanka.
Incredibly diverse rainforests, pristine white sand beaches, endless palm trees and colorful people — this is what over 20 million people call home. Since visiting this place, we’ve been planning our next trip back.
Beyond the monsoons, unforgiving moisture, and bus-driving maniacs, Sri Lanka is one of the most mesmerizing islands in the world. If you plan on making way your there, here are some of the attractions you shouldn’t miss.
Surfing all year-round
If you’re as big on waves as we are, then Sri Lanka is one spot that should be on top of your list. Not only are the waves breathtaking, surfing here happens almost all year round because of the special weather conditions and climate in the area. Two of the most exhilarating surf spots are located on either the south coast at Ahangama or on the east coast at Arugam Bay.
If you want to skip the surf and just lie idyllic on the sand and take in the sunset, then don’t fret. Sri Lanka is home to tropical beaches that boast of turquoise sea and white sands. The longer you stay here, the thought of going back to the city makes less and less sense.
Scenic train rides
The train experience on this side of the world is an adventure in itself. While divided into classes, you are welcomed with majestic views, with some of the most scenic ones found in the connections between Ella and Kandy, and between Polonnaruwa and Colombo.
Vast wildlife experience
Wildlife in Sri Lanka is wonderfully diverse. For one, the Yala National Park houses over 30 leopards. In fact, it is home to the world’s densest population of rare cats! Of course, there are numerous species of monkeys as well as elephants and crocodiles to stand in awe of too.
