This Addition to Hawaii’s Haiku Stairs is 100% Deadly
Hawaii is home to breathtaking attractions. On top of that list is the jaw dropping and very illegal, Haiku Stairs.
Fondly called the “Stairway to Heaven”, it’s extremely steep hiking trail in the island of O’ahu. Countless have been injured and many lost their lives in this dangerous trail no thanks to its 3,000+ steps. To say it’s completely bonkers is an understatement. It’s been closed to the public since 1987. However, the risk and high fines haven’t stopped tourists from sneaking into the infamous spot. In fact, the Honolulu Fire Department conducts all too many rescues in the area.
As if it couldn’t get any crazier, a loony decided to install an improvised swing made of a wooden plank and metal chains. “The swing, which was unlawfully installed on the poles next to the stairs, creates an additional and dangerous attraction for thrill-seekers and hikers and needs to be taken down,” says the Board of Water Supply.
“In a way, your story brought to light the risk of the situation, but it also did shed light on the swing being there,” Lau said. “Until then, we understand it was mainly through social media that it was advertising the location of that swing,” shared BWS manager and chief engineer Ernest Lau.
The cherry on top? It will cost an excess of $20,000 to have the swing removed. However, the price isn’t stopping authorities to remove the swing immediately.
“Let us do it, because there’s a possibility they might injure themselves or kill themselves by trying to put it down, because it looks very dangerous and very risky,” Lau said. “I’d rather have a contractor that’s properly equipped has the appropriate safety equipment, proper protection equipment to protect themselves and their workers and do it safely.”
