From making our way to the rockiest of trails to enduring countless blisters, the view at the top is always worth it.
Because we can’t get enough, we’re always up for the most challenging hikes around. So if you feel like boosting your bravado and amplifying those bragging rights, then book these badass backpacking trips now.
Cone Peak (San Francisco)
Jack Keoruac didn’t write about the Big Sur for nothing. It’s truly one of the most beautiful (and challenging) hikes in the country, the more adventurous being the Sea and Sky: A 23-mile stretch from Kirk Creek Campground and up Vicente Flat Trail.
Mattole to Black Sands Beach (California)
This majestic 25-mile stretch will require you to summon your endless strength as well as a shuttle car to drop you off at the Shelter Cove Trailhead and Mattole. The drive will take about an hour and a half. From here, there are countless camp sights to choose from. Just be careful on impassable trails due to high tide.
Broken Top (Oregon)
This 3-day, 2-night hike will take a lot out of you but the view of the Three Sisters Wilderness and the central Oregon Cascades is definitely worth it. Oh and if you find yourself here in the summer, the rewards are even grander thanks to the surrealistic views of Mount Adams in southern Washington and east to the Ochoco Mountains.
Just keep in mind that no matter how badass you are, be prepared for anything and everything. Good luck!
